NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Wescom Credit Union greets its members with a new, friendly face at its automated teller machines (ATMs) with help from Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE: DBD). Elizabeth, an animated on-screen hostess, welcomes Wescom ATM users and provides visual interludes during ATM processing functions. Diebold managed the integration of Elizabeth while adding new Opteva® ATMs equipped with deposit automation technology to Wescom’s fleet.

To personalize ATM experiences for its 220,000 members in Southern California, Wescom introduced the animated hostess named Elizabeth to its ATM fleet in 2003. She demonstrates ATM functions on screen while the machine is processing. For example, when a user withdraws money, Elizabeth carries the cash on screen while the ATM processes the transaction. She then “pushes” the cash out of the ATM at the same time as the dispenser. This interaction is more personal than a traditional “Please wait” screen.

In updating Elizabeth this year, Wescom refreshed her image as an animated figure to enable efficiency and consistency when developing new interlude screens. Diebold managed the development and deployment of customized software used to run the animated Elizabeth on Wescom’s ATMs. Future software updates will be deployed remotely using Diebold’s OpteView® ATM Remote Services capability.

“Whether Elizabeth is accepting deposits, processing checks or delivering cash, she humanizes the ATM experience,” said Kevin Sarber, senior vice president, service delivery, Wescom. “Diebold has been instrumental in deploying Elizabeth to our entire ATM fleet, helping to seamlessly integrate her action clips into our transaction flows and screen sets.”

Further enhancing member experiences at the ATM, Diebold is adding 20 new Opteva 760 deposit automation ATMs to Wescom’s fleet. The ATMs enable members to complete envelope-free transactions by depositing up to 50 mixed-denomination notes into enhanced note acceptors (ENAs) and up to 30 checks into Bulk Document Intelligent Depository Modules® (IDMBDs). Diebold’s current deposit automation technology delivers the industry’s fastest transaction time, accepting deposits of up to 30 bank notes and 10 checks in less than 60 seconds. The new ATMs will be dispersed among Wescom’s 29 branches, and the credit union plans to add more deposit automation terminals in the future.

“Deposit automation enables multiple efficiencies for Wescom, including reduced ATM courier trips, faster processing and elimination of empty-envelope fraud,” said Mychal D. Kempt, vice president, North American sales and service operations, Diebold. “In addition, the technology expedites a unique service that allows credit union members to view images of all checks deposited at the ATM via Wescom’s online banking platform. Because the ATMs automatically scan checks, Wescom can more rapidly link those images to members’ accounts compared to the checks it manually scans at its processing center.”

While introducing the new Elizabeth to members, Wescom is using her likeness to promote its new deposit automation capabilities. For example, Wescom will give members a $1 promotional check featuring an image of Elizabeth, which they can then deposit using the new deposit automation ATMs.
